A new art exhibit opens tomorrow at Evergreen Gallery in SLC. Several local artists were each given a 20" x 20" painting panel to do with what we pleased. Come see how mine turned out! New Group Show at Evergreen Gallery / October 21st

Portrait Sketch from Life in Oil Paint

It's been a long time since I last got the oil paints out at a live portrait session. I've only painted portraits from life in oils a few times before. It's easier to stick with mediums I'm more familiar with for portraits, such as pastel or charcoal. But Casey Childs has cajoled me on a few occasions to practice painting from life with oil paints. Last week I finally hauled a paintbox with oil paints into Casey's studio and did the oil sketch shown above. It was made with a limited palette; cadmium yellow, cadmium red, and ivory black, plus titanium white.

Holiday Exhibits 2015

Evergreen Gallery in Salt Lake City has used a generous part of their wall space to show fourteen plein air paintings I've done. The photograph shown above and the one shown below are different angles of the wall that Evergreen Gallery is using to exhibit my work. All paintings are for sale.

Logan Fine Art Gallery in Logan, Utah and Juniper Sky Fine Art Gallery in Ivins, Utah (near St. George) also have for sale paintings I've made. Holiday Shows and Exhibitions 2014

Two weeks until Christmas! A little less than two weeks left to do your holiday shopping. If you're looking for a unique gift for someone, a plein air oil painting would be a gift to enjoy for a lifetime! Evergreen Framing Co. & Gallery in Salt Lake City is showing several of my plein air oil paintings, plus a wide variety of works by other Utah artists.

The picture at the top of this post shows some of the paintings I have at Evergreen Framing Co. & Gallery, along with some paintings by David Meikle and works by other artists. The image directly above is another angle of some of those paintings.

The third image shows a few of the paintings I have at the Window Box Gallery in Provo. As with all the galleries showing my paintings, the Window Box Gallery also has a wide variety of works by several artists. They include Kimbal Warren, part of whose painting shows in the lower left of the above photograph. The picture below is a closeup of a couple paintings of mine at the Window Box Gallery.

Going BIG!

It's not the biggest plein air landscape in the history of painting outdoors, but it's pretty big! It's twice as big as any plein air painting I've ever done before. It's also probably bigger than anything I've seen at plein air shows I've attended over the years.

I've been toying with the idea of doing some very large (for me) outdoor paintings for quite some time. Recently a gallery that sells my work called and told me they had a client interested in my work, but they wanted to see paintings much larger than what I usually do. That provided the impetus for me to actually go out and paint bigger.

About a week and a half ago I went to Heber valley, set up my easel along a country road, secured a two foot by three foot primed panel to the easel, and set to painting. The painting was started around ten or eleven in the morning, and finished around six or seven in the evening. During that time I forgot to take any breaks. I had some food and water with me, but I forgot to use any of it. I did have one break imposed upon me, though. A small cattle drive came down the road so I tossed all my painting gear into the car and waited for a couple minutes as the cattle were driven past my parked car. After they passed I immediately set everything back up and got right back to work.

It was the smallest cattle drive I've ever seen. I might have been OK if I had not taken refuge in my car, but I've been stuck in some much bigger cattle drives where I was glad to be secure in my car. Cattle want to avoid you, but in much larger cattle drives cattle in the back of the herd press forward, pushing those ahead of them. I've had cattle pushed into my car hard enough to rock the car. I think it would not do to try to paint in something like that.

On this particular day, though, the cattle passed without incident. A little later a car full of teenagers stopped to see what I was doing. They complimented me on the painting, and one of them said from the back seat, "Dude! Your painting's sick!" 

Utah 2014 Show

Tomorrow, February 21, 2014 is the opening of a new show at Evergreen Gallery, 3295 South 2000 East  in Salt Lake City. The show is called Utah 2014. It's a group show, and all of the painters featured in the exhibit have each painted a 20" x 14" cradle board for the show. The opening reception is tomorrow from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. All of the paintings in the exhibit are for sale. Pictured above is my entry for the show, a plein air oil painting made a few weeks ago. Here is something Evergreen Gallery has published about the show:

A January Landscape

January isn't my favorite month. February still brings winter storms, but the month begins to show a warming trend and a promise of relief from winter's tightest grip. It doesn't matter to me what Punxsutawney Phil and his top-hatted cronies predict, February is the downhill side of winter and is always welcome in my "Book of Months."

Still, there can be much to enjoy about the middle of winter. On days when the dreary gray takes a temporary leave of absence and sunshine reaches the valley floor - those days can be glorious indeed! That's when the brilliant azure dome of sky arches over a crystal landscape, and snow refracts diamond-like the slanting rays of la lumière du soleil.

Those are days I want to be out painting winter's finery en plein aire, no matter how deep the snow or cold the air. Sunshine makes all the difference. The painting starting off this post was painted mid-January on just such a day.

That painting, "A Winter Walk", will be part of a group show later this month (February) at Evergreen Gallery in Salt Lake City.

Group Show Opening in Salt Lake City Tomorrow

A new group show opens tomorrow night (Friday, Nov. 15) at Evergreen Gallery in Salt Lake City. The exhibit includes eight of my most recent paintings, which were all done "en plein air" and feature local rural and alpine landscapes. I'm excited to be a part of this show! There will be quite a variety of wonderful artwork for sale from four painters and one potter. Holiday Exhibits, 2012

Today, December 7, 2012, is "First Friday Gallery Stroll." Galleries stay open later than usual on the first Friday of every month so patrons can spend an evening going from one gallery to the next, enjoying the artwork on display. The gallery stroll is free, and while you're out you could have dinner at a local restaurant, or visit some of the other attractions in your town. You might even find some artwork that would make great gifts!
